Arts and Literature A blow to ‘Progressive Arts’
When one looks at the painting of Varma with a pure rationalistic and civilized mind there arises an issue of morality. So is the case with Husain. The difference comes to play when we consider the change in the social frame works and the fact that Husain is a Muslim.
Progressive Arts suffered a severe blow when the Haridwar court ordered the Mumbai Police to attach M.F. Husain’s property in South Mumbai. As far as the judgment of court is concerned it is an apposite decision. The reason is that when he was asked to summon before the court, he didn’t comply with its orders. He was indicted in a defamation case for painting the nude painting of Bharath Mata. It is different case to deal with the freedom of an artist. The 92-year-old-painter became a customary object of communal forces especially the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal. And the artist kept on plying between Dubai and London; and could not stay behind in the land for protracted period of time. It may due this fear that he did not agree to the summon of the court. And higher court later turned down the order of the Haridwar court when he appealed before it through a legal representative. India has inestimable number of such talents in her hold, even in history. One is Raja Ravi Varma. When one looks at the painting of Varma with a pure rationalistic and civilized mind there arises a corresponding issue of morality. So is the case with Husain. The difference comes to play when we consider the change in the social frame works and the verity that Husain is a Muslim. It is not good for a progressive society like that of India to pact with issues like this. In this respect the defamation case filed against Husain is a blow to the progressive nature of the society as a whole. One needs to under stand the fact that aesthetics lies with the person who appreciates the work. But Husain should also consider the emotions of people when he holds his artistic freedom to his chest. More over one should bestow primary interest to the emotions of people with regard to his motherland in such a case.
