The kernel of Linux is developed with the aid of system efficacies and libraries from the GNU Project. That is why the operating system is also known as GNU/Linux. In 1984 the GNU Project, with the objective of crafting a UNIX-like, POSIX-friendly operating system. By 1990 it collected all source codes and necessary utilities to create a free operating system platform. Linux was reliant on the Minix user space initially. Later by incorporating various projects and open codes from GNU the full version of Linux (GNU/Linux) was released. Linux became more famous as they were widely deployed in servers and networking. Many GNU projects use Linux as the platform to work. It gained support from giants like IBM, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Novell. Today many desktop computers, supercomputers, and embedded devices such as cell phones widely employ this operating system. Thus Linux is now being used more than any other operating system.
