Free Software Foundation (FSF) The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is a non-profit corporation established in 1985 by Richard Stallman to shore up the free software society. As mentioned in the site it is "free" as in "freedom. The FSF is integrated in the ‘Commonwealth of Massachusetts’. Till 1990 the funding the foundation is use for paying software developers to make free software. Soon after that there was an increase in the number of volunteers of the organization and started discussing issues related to the free software movement and the free software community especially the legal issues. Being unfailing with its aspirations, only free software is employed on all of the projects computers. Here are some facts and factors that come – and are to be detailed. The GNU Project
The foundation fashioned the GNU operating system to cheer up the ethics of free software.
About GNU Licenses
The GNU General Public License (GPL) is the most extensively used license for Free Software projects. The license version (version 2) which we are using now was released back in 1991 (but it should be noted that FSF is working on version 3). GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) are other popular licenses from FSF. FSF has the resources and the will to enforce the GPL and other GNU licenses, but only for software for which it owns the copyrights; GPL'd software owned by others must be defended by its owners, since the FSF has no legal standing to enforce the GPL for them. FSF handles around 50 GPL violations per year and tries to bring the other party into compliance without involving the courts. FSF was awarded the "Award for the Advancement of Free Software" and "Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit" for its contribution for the development and promotion of free softwares. It is really the guardian of all copyright of the Free Softwares as per GNU Licenses. FSF is having its own publishing department to publish affordable books on computer science using freely distributable licenses."
It also maintains a free software directory to include all free softwares verified and registered by GNU.
